Evan Hsieh

Evan Hsieh manages Dr. Fawzi’s basic research laboratory.  He graduated from University of California Los Angeles with a B.S. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology.  His research interests include diabetic and oxygen induced retinopathies mostly in mice but makes an exception for humans every now and then. When he’s not working on protocols in the lab he can be found hugging sharks.

 
 

Nicole Decker

Nicole Decker is currently a research study assistant in Dr. Fawzi’s clinical lab. She recently graduated from the University of Michigan where she earned her B.S in Biomolecular Science. Her research interests include OCTA, AOSLO, and diabetic retinopathy. Outside of the lab, Nicole loves to try new restaurants, travel, and spend time with her family and friends.

 

Postdoctoral Fellows

 

Katia Corano Scheri

Katia Corano Scheri is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Dr. Fawzi’s Basic Research laboratory. She graduated from Sapienza University of Rome in Italy with a M.S. in Genetics and Molecular Biology and a Ph.D. in Morphogenesis and Tissue Engineering. She moved to the United States for her postdoctoral studies. Her research interests include diabetic and oxygen induced retinopathies, with a special focus on eye fibrosis. Outside of the lab she likes reading, hiking and travelling and she loves rock music and concerts.

 

 

Daniela Castellanos Canales

Daniela Castellanos Canales is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Dr. Fawzi’s clinical Research laboratory. Daniela earned her medical degree from Universidad Anáhuac in Mexico City. She’s passionate about bringing the best treatments and diagnostic tools to patients through research. On her spare time Daniela enjoys long distance running and reading.

 

 

Hisashi Fukuyama

Hisashi Fukuyama is currently acting as a visiting research fellow in Dr. Fawzi’s clinical laboratory. He has received his M.D. from Osaka University and received his Ph.D. from Hyogo College of Medicine. He has continued his training of surgical retina and medical retina in Japan. He is interested in clinical research with a special focus on retinal imaging. Apart from research, he enjoys spending time with his three boys and wife.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Medical Students

Bonnie Huang

Bonnie Huang is a second-year medical student at the Feinberg School of Medicine. She received her Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering: Bioinformatics from the University of California San Diego. Her research interests include OCTA, AOSLO, and retinal diseases. Outside of research, she enjoys reading, long-distance running, and spending time with family and friends.

 

Jessica Song

Jessica Song is a Northwestern Class of 2019 graduate majoring in Human Communication Sciences & Disorders. She is currently a fourth year medical student at Feinberg School of Medicine. Oftentimes, one will find her watching wildlife videos or crime shows. She also enjoys traveling, cooking, and playing with dogs.

 

Peter Nesper

Peter Nesper is currently a 4th year medical student at Rosalind Franklin University. When he isn’t studying or working in the lab, he enjoys agreeing with Tom how much better the Rangers are than the Blackhawks.

 

Janice Ong

​Janice Ong is a fourth-year medical student at Feinberg. She received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Biology from MIT. Her research interests are in OCTA and diabetic retinopathy. Outside of research, she enjoys painting, biking, and trying new recipes.

 

Undergraduate Students

 

Taylor Rutigliano

Taylor Rutigliano is currently a pre-dental undergraduate student at Northwestern University. She is majoring in Biology with a minor in Psychology. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and playing with her pets.

 

Eunji Jeong

Eunji Jeong is a pre-med student at Northwestern University, majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Music Technology. Her interests are singing, taking walks, styling, and eating.

 

Jessica Moonjely

Jessica Moonjely is a second-year undergraduate student at Northwestern University. She is a pre-med student majoring in Cognitive Science. Outside of research, she enjoys trying out new coffee places, arranging music, and traveling with her family.
